This is one of the best known bathing resorts on the Turkish Riviera. Already in early times the city was known as a bathing resort. Marcus Antonius gave in 37 b.C. the city and the provence of Cilicië to his beloved Cleopatra. The city has an intensive nightlife well known for its beautiful beaches.
Alanya lies against an impressive rock which emerges suddenly between two beaches (the Cleopatra beach and the East beach). On the rock lies a citadel from the 13 century, of the most splendid sites from the area of the Mediterranean sea. The citadel has been well kept free and has very long walls and 150 towers. In 1220 sultan Alaeddin Keykybat made of Alanya its winter stay. The old buildings still show how important the city was under the sovereignty of the Selts At the impressive citadel remarkable shipyards and the Kizil Rule lie (red tower, 33 m. high tower which served as an angle corner tower for the fortress, built in 1225-1227).
The city has now approximately 35,000 inhabitants. It is a splendid bathing resort with a lot of restaurants, hotels and cafes along the beach. Here one can shop also in abundance 'Turkish' in many small shops along the coastal highway where one should be for souvenirs, leather, jewellery and much more.
Once the city was the most important sea port of the Selts as sometimes described as the Miami of Turkey. Here the most beautiful sand beaches of Turkey lie, which are several miles long. Alanya has developed the previous years up to one of the most important tourist places of Turkey. Because of the subtropical climate, more and more tourists come in the winter. At night at the harbour it swarms of people. Here it is always sociable because of many restaurants and bars. High above Alanya a huge citadel lies which is at night attractive lighted.
