Efes (Efeze, Ephesus)
The city is full of mystic, you'll find history on every corner so to speak. A city of which it's roots go way back in time up to 6000 years before Christ.
You find yourself in a large open air museum in the world when you walk through the. You won't have enough eyes or fantasy to see how life once could have been. You will find nothing less than 46 unique historical finds. One does not exclude new finds certainly because it has been calculated that only 5% has been found yet.
Through out the centuries several groups of people have lived and dominated here. In fact Efes was a city with an enormous wealth was: a highly developed culture completely with social institutions and an own port. The city lived its flowering time in 600 years for Christ with the famous poets Kallinos and Hipponaks, and the scientist Herakletios. Today Efes has been linked to the city of Selcuk with 30,000 inhabitants.
People of Efes think that the city was founded by the Amazon king Ephos, this could explain the name Efes. According to the mythology the city has been founded by Androklos, the son of king Kadros. However by archaeological
digs and the objects found becomes clear that both legends are not in agreement with the carbon dating of those objects. Experts think that the finds to go back to 1500 before Christ. These finds can be seen in the museum of Efes.
Annually the many curiosities are visited by millions of tourists.
Efes is not only known for its cultural wealth but also
by the religious meaning for Christianity and Islam. In Efes is you can find the house (the last place of residance) of the holy virgin Maria himself. Maria escaped with evangelist John from Jerusalem to Efes. She has lived here up to her last days. The pope baptised the house of Maria in 1961, to a place for pilgrims. In the years afterwards several popes made a pilgrimage to this holy place. It is also place of pilgrimage for Moslems, they consider Maria as a mother of the prophet Isa (Jesus).
However the largest tourist attraction of Efes is the Artemis temple which was built in onor of the godess Artemis. The temple was rebuilt and destroyed several times during the course of centuries. One pillar is the only thing that remains of the temple. The Christians were in former days oppressed in Efes because there the Artemis culture predominated. The culture tolerated no other religion. After the Christians got a majority they have completely demolished the temple. The temple is one of the seven world wonders.
The city mainly known for the museum and the hole of the seven sleepers. In short a historical spot which you must have seen.
