Pamukkale

Pamukkale, the cotton castle, with its white terraces thanks it's origin and splendour to 35 degrees warm water which bubbles up here. It is suspected that the terraces arose when the slope was exploited as a quarry. There lime layers, which continued to grow, formed small ponds.

Already in ancient times people discovered the medical effects of the water, Cleopatra gave order to build a special bath here, today you still can swim here. The water does not look very attractive at first glance to swim there. However behind the green plants which decorate the water there are medicinal effects for both the skin and muscles.

This once white landscape, filled with plateaus with clear blue water seemed just to come out a fairy tale. A chemical masterpiece created by nature which has astonish scientists. The strong lime and mineral water of the sources has produced terraces in the millions of years.

Unfortunately hotels made abuse of the beneficial functioning of the water of Pamukkale. This resulted that not enough water did run in the Pamukkale, as a result the water turned from clear to yellow. Fortunately the Turkish government decided that hotels only may use small quantaties of the water. Now the water has returned to it's normal clearness.

ASPENDOS

Aspendos lies close to the village of Belkisen and 40km from Antalya. Concerning the origin of the city little or nothing has been known. People believe the village was founded thousand years ago by the Greek seer Mopsos.

In earlier days the river Köprü Cayi to Aspendos was from the sea navigable. Here too Alexander the Great settled here. Under Roman times the city reached its largest prosperity. According to the historical scientist Strabo the city had been founded by colonists from Argos, Lead by Mopsos.

According to coins found from 4th and 5th century for our chronology the city was called Estvediya. Aspendos and Side were the only cities which had their own currencies.

The city was part of the Delian league supported by Athens and a Persian fleet was defeated by the Athens commander Cimon.
